LG takes wraps off Prada II

If you’ve been sitting in the brace position nervously waiting for the official specs of the Prada II, we have good news – LG has finally ended your misery and unveiled its new touchscreen blower.

There are few surprises from a phone LG admits is ‘almost identical’ to the original apart from the new slide-out QWERTY keypad. Connectivity is impressive thanks to 7.2Mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi, and you also get FM radio and stereo Bluetooth.

Considering LG seems has seemingly started fitting its camphones with 8MP sensors as standard – just look at the KC780 and KC910 – the Prada II’s 5MP lens might seem disappointing, but it’s hardly a hammer low.

Naturally, LG is claiming that the metallic keyboard makes the Prada II a ‘modern icon of mobile style’ – we’ll be the judge of that in an unboxing and hands-on video soon.

Scientists make windpipe from stem cells

Doctors have for the first time grown a human organ in a laboratory and transplanted it into a patient.

And because it was built with the patient's own stem cells, there is no chance of it being rejected by her body.

The team of scientists from Britain, Spain and Italy believe it is the start of a new era of highly successful transplant operations, in which organs are grown to order.

The patient, Claudia Castillo, had suffered a serious complication of tuberculosis.

Her trachea, or airway, had collapsed, preventing air from reaching one of her lungs.

The young mother, who has two children, volunteered for the new procedure after doctors told her the only alternative was to remove her lung.

She said: "I wanted to feel completely well and be able to do normal things like go to work and be with my children. I was very frightened, but it all turned out well."

The new technique is called tissue engineering.

Doctors first removed a section of airway from a dead donor, and used chemicals to strip away the cells that would cause rejection after transplantation.

They then used stem cells taken from Claudia to create cartilage and other specialised cells.

These were put onto what remained of the donor's airway, to form a fully functioning breathing tube.

This was transplanted into Claudia five months ago.

Stem Cell/Organ Graft Technique

Professor Paolo Macchiarini, from the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, said she should now live a normal life.

"She has returned to being a mother. She can play with her children. If she stays in this health I will be the happiest doctor in the world."

Scientists at Bristol University played a key role in the success of the procedure. They grew the six million cells which were used to create the new airway.

Professor Anthony Hollander told Sky News: "The science is complex, but the solution we came up with in the end is relatively simple. That's what it is all about: taking the complexities of the science and turning it into a manageable therapeutic solution."

The team predicts they will be able to grow and transplant a new larynx, or voice box, within five years. Even hearts could be engineered in the lab.

Writing in The Lancet medical journal, they said they had achieved "a milestone in medicine".

Please bring back the death penalty in the UK.

I read a story today about a 17 month old child (Baby P can't be named for legal reasons) who was beaten to death by His mother and two other men, and it knocks me sick the thought of tax payers money is going to waste keeping child abusing scum like them in british jails.

The kind of people who can cause such pain and distress to a defenceless child, deserve to die a horrible death.

Baby P, had suffered repeated and unexplained injuries in his short life.
The post-mortem examination revealed Baby P had suffered:

• Eight broken ribs and a broken back, with another area of bleeding around the spine at neck level.

• Numerous bruises, cuts and abrasions, including a deep tear to his left ear lobe, which had been pulled away from his head.

• Severe lacerations to the top of his head, including a large gouge which could have been caused by a dog bite.

• Blackened finger- and toenails, with several nails missing; the middle finger of his right hand was without a nail and its tip was also missing, as if it had been sliced off.

• A tear to his fraenulum, the strip of skin between the middle of the upper lip and the gum, which had partially healed.

• One of his front teeth had also been knocked out and was found in his colon. He had swallowed it.

The boy's mother admitted causing his death while two men were convicted of the same offence.

I don't think people like that should be allowed to live rent free in british holiday camps, more commonly known as jail. They should be sentenced to death by which ever way gets the job done, personally i would drag them by the ankles tied to the back of a car until there dead but thats just my opinion.

I would'nt mind if they just stick em in jail with the other inmates left to deal out justice, but they are segregated to prevent any harm coming to them, given 3 square meals a day and games consoles in there cell, all at the expense of the Great British tax payer.

Please feel free to leave your comments below or on DIGG us using the DIGG button on the right and i will look forward to reading them.

Polar warming 'caused by human activity'

By Jenny Haworth
news.scotsman.com

SCIENTISTS claim they have finally proved human behaviour is responsible for warming at the north and south poles.

The researchers hope their work will help to persuade sceptics that mankind is to blame for the melting ice in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Environmental groups have long insisted human activities – such as burning fossil fuels and producing harmful greenhouse gases – are responsible for rising temperatures at the poles but there has been no conclusive proof.

Scientists from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia studied temperature records from both poles and compared the patterns with models produced by computer simulations.

One model was based on natural temperature changes and the other on those caused by humans.

They discovered that only the model that included human influences was able to reproduce the observed temperature trends.

Dr Peter Stott, head of climate monitoring at the Met Office, who was also involved in the research, said: "In both polar regions the observed warming can only be reproduced in our models by including human influences – natural forces alone are not enough."

Dr Alexey Karpechko, author of the report published in Nature Geoscience, said he hoped the research would help persuade sceptics.

"For me, there's enough evidence without this report, but there are some people who think that we haven't shown enough proof," he said.

As the temperature increases at the poles, ice caps melt, removing a protective layer, so the earth absorbs more sunlight and gets even hotter.

Previous studies have observed rises in Arctic and Antarctic temperatures but have not formally attributed the changes to human influence, partly due to poor observation data.

Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said there was not enough evidence to be sure humans were responsible for temperature rises at Antarctica.

Dr Richard Dixon, director of WWF Scotland, said the report was "significant", adding: "It's good to get this sort of proof in two of the most crucial regions that are being affected most quickly. It's sometimes quite hard to prove things that are quite obvious."

He compared it to efforts to show that lung cancer was caused by smoking, which took decades to prove.
